Your dog deserves a safe, stress-free experience when staying with us. That’s why every new K9U guest begins with our comprehensive, FREE dog boarding or daycare evaluation process.

Understanding Our Comprehensive Evaluation Process (Also Known as: Trial Day Evaluation)

Imagine dropping your beloved dog off for their first day of daycare or boarding. Will they be comfortable? Safe? Happy? These questions naturally arise for any caring pet parent. At K9U Chicago, we understand these concerns completely, which is why we’ve developed our thorough evaluation process for all new guests.

As Chicago’s oldest and largest dog care facility, with over 29,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, we’ve welcomed thousands of dogs through our doors. This experience has taught us that proper evaluation isn’t just helpful, it’s essential for creating a safe environment where every dog can thrive.

Our free evaluation process serves multiple purposes:

  • Assessing your dog’s temperament and play style
  • Identifying any stress triggers or special needs
  • Determining the best play group placement
  • Creating a personalized care plan for your dog
  • Ensuring the safety of all dogs in our care

The evaluation is comprehensive yet stress-free for your dog, conducted by our experienced Dog Handlers who are trained in reading canine body language and behavior patterns.

How We Assess Temperaments

At K9U, we believe that understanding a dog’s unique temperament is the foundation of providing exceptional care. Our evaluation process goes beyond basic observations to create a detailed profile of your dog’s personality, preferences, and needs.

K9U Free Daycare Evaluation How We Assess Temperaments

Step 1: Initial Introduction and Assessment

Your dog’s evaluation begins with a one-on-one meeting with one of our trained staff members. During this time, we observe:

  • Body language and comfort level in a new environment
  • Response to handling by unfamiliar individuals
  • Basic obedience and communication skills
  • Energy level and play style preferences
  • Any signs of anxiety or stress

This individual attention allows us to establish a baseline understanding of your dog’s temperament in a controlled setting before introducing any social elements with other dogs.

Step 2: Controlled Social Interactions

Once your dog shows comfort with our staff, we carefully introduce them to a small, selected group of well-socialized dogs. During this time, we closely monitor:

  • How your dog initiates and responds to play
  • Communication signals with other dogs
  • Comfort level in group settings
  • Resource guarding tendencies
  • Play style compatibility with different dogs

Step 3: Environmental Exposure

We gradually expose your dog to different areas of our facility, observing how they respond to various environments. This helps us understand:

  • Sound sensitivity
  • Comfort in indoor vs. outdoor spaces
  • Preference for active or quiet areas
  • Response to normal facility activities

Throughout the entire process, our trained staff members document observations that help us create a personalized care plan for your dog.

Why Thorough Evaluations Matter for Your Dog’s Safety

At K9U, we believe that comprehensive evaluations are fundamental to responsible dog care – not an optional add-on. Here’s why we invest so much in this process and offer it at no cost to our clients:

Preventing Potential Conflicts

Dogs, like people, have different communication styles and social preferences. Without proper assessment, placing incompatible dogs together can lead to unnecessary stress or conflict. Our evaluation process identifies these factors before any issues arise, creating harmonious playgroups where all dogs can feel comfortable.

Identifying Special Needs

Some dogs have specific requirements that aren’t immediately apparent. Through our evaluation, we may discover that a dog needs:

  • Extra decompression time after play
  • Quieter spaces during certain parts of the day
  • Specific types of play partners
  • Structured breaks throughout the day
  • Individualized attention from staff

Identifying these needs from day one allows us to provide truly personalized care.

Building Trust and Familiarity

The evaluation process isn’t just for our benefit – it helps your dog gradually acclimate to our facility, staff, and routines. This transition period reduces stress and helps ensure your dog views K9U as a positive, enjoyable environment from their very first visit.

Creating Customized Care Plans

Every dog who stays with us receives individualized attention based on what we learn during their evaluation. This might include specific playgroup recommendations, activity preferences, rest schedules, and handling protocols – all documented in your dog’s personal profile.

We offer this thorough evaluation process at no cost because we believe it’s the foundation of responsible, high-quality dog care. Your dog’s safety and happiness are our priority, and proper assessment is non-negotiable in achieving that goal.

Our Specialized Approach to Reactive Dogs

Many facilities turn away dogs who show signs of reactivity, but at K9U, we embrace the opportunity to work with dogs who may require more fine-tuned care. Our expertise with reactive dogs is one of our proudest specialties.

Understanding Reactivity

Reactivity in dogs isn’t aggression – it’s typically a response to fear, anxiety, over-arousal, or lack of socialization. Reactive dogs are often:

  • Uncomfortable in certain situations or environments
  • Overwhelmed by particular triggers (other dogs, unfamiliar people, loud noises)
  • Expressing stress through behaviors like barking, lunging, or growling
  • Perfectly loving and well-behaved in environments where they feel safe

Our evaluation process is particularly valuable for reactive dogs, as it helps us identify specific triggers and develop management strategies.

Customized Plans for Reactive Dogs

For dogs showing signs of reactivity, our evaluation may include:

  • Extended one-on-one time with our trained staff members
  • Gradual exposure to potential triggers in controlled settings
  • Identification of calming techniques that works specifically for your dog
  • Assessment of compatible playmates for carefully supervised interactions

Based on this evaluation, we create individualized daycare and boarding plans that might include:

  • Specialized play groups with compatible dogs
  • Individual play sessions with our trained staff
  • Strategic daily schedules with appropriate activity and rest periods
  • Enrichment activities tailored to your dog’s preferences
  • Quiet spaces for decompression when needed

“My dog has been labeled ‘reactive’ at other facilities, but K9U took the time to understand her specific triggers and concerns. Their evaluation process identified that she does beautifully with certain play styles and just needs proper introductions. She now LOVES going to K9U and I’ve seen improvement in her overall confidence.” — Maya S., K9U Client

Our Facility Design Supports Reactive Dogs

Beyond our evaluation process, we’ve designed our 29,000 square-foot facility with reactive dogs in mind:

  • Separate entrance and exit areas for reactive dogs, when needed
  • Multiple distinct play spaces to accommodate different groups
  • Quiet retreat areas throughout the facility
  • Sound-dampening features in indoor spaces
  • Trained staff members positioned throughout play areas
