What to expect from expert dog boarding and training in Chicago
K9 University Chicago is a multi-faceted boarding, daycare, and training facility where you can learn awesome dog training skills. We not only offer expert dog boarding, daycare, and training but fun ways to learn and interact with your dog.
Before you take your dog into their first dog boot camp session, there are a few commands you can easily teach at home which may better prepare your pet for their professional training. Dog obedience training is highly rewarding and great for dogs that are overactive and need a little more guidance, but most of our four legged friends (regardless of age), can pick up these essential commands.
Basic commands to teach your dog
Some of the basic commands that are taught to dogs at a young age include come, sit, down, stay and walking on a leash. Different trainers have different ways of teaching these commands to dogs – while some use positive reinforcement techniques with treats, others may prefer to teach the dog in a group setting with other dogs, for example. Regardless of the type of commands that you are teaching your dogs, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make sure it learns the commands you are teaching it:
- Be consistent: If you are teaching your dog to sit, don’t say “sit” one day and “sit down here, boy” the next day. Using the same words and language will make it easier for your dog to understand what you are asking it to do.
- Treats and rewards: Make sure you invest in healthy treats and snacks if you choose to use rewards during your training. Some dogs aren’t that interested in food and treats. If this sounds like your pet, consider verbal praise and petting to let your dog know that it completed the task correctly.
- Involve different people: As your dog comes to understand basic commands, get other people such as your spouse, kids or guests to ask your dog to sit or stay.
